Spend some time with loved ones in SecondLife this weekend - no SocialDistancing necessary! Treddleford sat in an easeful arm-chair in front of a slumberous fire, with a volume of verse in his hand and the comfortable consciousness that outside the club windows the rain was dripping and pattering with persistent purpose. A chill, wet October afternoon was merging into a bleak, wet October evening, and the club smoking-room seemed warmer and cosier by contrast.

It was an afternoon on which to be wafted away from one's climatic surroundings, and "The Golden journey to Samarkand" promised to bear Treddleford well and bravely into other lands and under other skies.

He had already migrated from London the rain-swept to Bagdad the Beautiful, and stood by the Sun Gate "in the olden time" when an icy breath of imminent annoyance seemed to creep between the book and himself. Second Life.

This commerce is handled with the in-world unit-of-trade, the Linden dollar, which can be converted to US dollars at several thriving online Linden Dollar exchanges.

I've uninstalled and re-installed, and tried the "fix" but nothing happens. Like the critique of many of the others, there is something wrong with this version that for a good many people it simply does not work.

Unusable with the glitch that keeps so many of us from opening it. Until SL recognizes the problem there is nothing to review. Must faster then the viewer 1. User agreement is not shown and thus cannot be read.By Jeremy Linden. Your username and your display name are totally separate.

If you haven't set a display name, then it defaults to your username. Your username is the unique account name or account ID you use to log into Second Life. By default, it appears above your avatar inworld and identifies you to other Second Life Residents. If you created your Second Life account before mid, you have a Second Life "first name" and "last name" that determine your username as follows: firstname. Your username is a unique and personal account identifier in Second Life, and as such, many systems within Second Life depend on it.

Changing a username is difficult, and as such, can only be done through a fee-based web service. See Changing usernames for more information. However, you can change your display name as often as once a week. There are no fees associated with changing your display name. The official Second Life Viewer requires a single username.

However, some third-party viewers still have fields for a first name and a last name. If you are a longtime Second Life Resident with both a first and last name, simply enter your first name and last name in the corresponding fields. If you are a Second Life Resident with a single-word username, simply enter that username along with your password and log in as usual.

If you are an older Second Life Resident who has a first and last name, you have two options :. You can't control the display of your username to other Residents, but you can control whether you see others' usernames and whether you see your own name.

A club scene showing usernames and display names is illustrated at left. In this image, some usernames are blurred. Notice that only the username is shown above avatars who haven't set a display name. Changing your username will update your login information accordingly, unlike a Display Name.

You can choose whether or not to show other Residents' display names and usernames inworld. If you choose to view display names or usernames, they appear in the name tags above every avatar and in chat. In addition to letters and numbers, you can use the following characters in your display name:.Second Life is an online virtual worlddeveloped and owned by the San Francisco -based firm Linden Lab and launched on June 23, It saw rapid growth for some years and in it had approximately one million regular users; [1] growth stabilised and by the end of active user count had declined a little to "betweenand ,".

The virtual world can be accessed freely via Linden Lab's own client software or via alternative third-party viewers. They can explore the world known as the gridmeet other residents, socialize, participate in both individual and group activities, build, create, shop, and trade virtual property and services with one another. The platform principally features 3D-based user-generated content.

Second Life also has its own virtual currency, the Linden Dollar, which is exchangeable with real world currency. Second Life is intended for people aged 16 and over, with the exception of 13—year-old users, who are restricted to the Second Life region of a sponsoring institution e. InPhilip Rosedale formed Linden Lab with the intention of developing computer hardware to allow people to become immersed in a virtual world.

In its earliest form, the company struggled to produce a commercial version of the hardware, known as "The Rig", which in prototype form was seen as a clunky steel contraption with computer monitors worn on shoulders.

In andSecond Life began to receive significant media attention, including a cover story in BusinessWeek magazine featuring the virtual world and Second Life avatar Anshe Chung.

At the same time, the service saw a period of exponential growth of its user base.

On December 11,Cory Ondrejkawho helped program Second Lifewas forced to resign as chief technology officer. In Januaryresidents spent a total of 28, hours "inworld" and on average 38, residents were logged in at any moment. The maximum concurrency number of avatars inworld recorded is 88, in the first quarter of It was announced in October that Bob Komin, Linden Lab's chief financial officer and chief operating officer, would take over the CEO job for the immediate future.

Rosedale accepted the award. In November During a meeting with investors, Rosedale noticed that the participants were particularly responsive to the collaborative, creative potential of Second Life. As a result, the initial objective-driven, gaming focus of Second Life was shifted to a more user-created, community-driven experience. Second Life ' s status as a virtual worlda computer game, or a talkeris frequently debated.

It can also be argued that Second Life is a multi-user virtual world, because its virtual world facilitates interaction between multiple users.

Join Second Life

As it does not have any stipulated goals, it is irrelevant to talk about winning or losing in relation to Second Life. Likewise, unlike a traditional talker [ vague ]Second Life contains an extensive world that can be explored and interacted with, and it can be used purely as a creative tool set if the user so chooses.

We see it as a platform. In AugustLinden Lab closed the teen grid due to operating costs. Since then, users aged 16 and over can sign up for a free account. There are three activity-based classifications, called "Ratings", for sims in Second Life :.

There is no charge for creating a Second Life account or for making use of the world for any period of time. Linden Lab reserves the right to charge for the creation of large numbers of multiple accounts for a single person 5 per household, 2 per 24 hours [28] but at present does not do so.

However, the vast majority of casual users of Second Life do not upgrade beyond the free "basic" account. Avatars may take any form users choose human, animal, vegetable, mineral, or a combination thereof or residents may choose to resemble themselves as they are in real life.To an outsider, Second Life may look like a crappier version of World of Warcraft. It's a vast digital space many people can log into with their virtual avatars, only instead of going on wild adventures, slaying dragons and collecting epic swords, it just seems like a bunch of people hanging out in bars, offices, galleries—normal places.

That's a fair assessment of Second Lifebut what makes it special and lasting isn't as apparent. Yes, Second Lifewhich first launched inlooks incredibly dated.

Thirteen years is an eon in the technology business. There are massively multiplayer games that look prettier, bigger social networks that are better integrated to our daily routines, and video games that are far more fun to play. So why is it still hanging around?

The short answer is that there's nothing else quite like it. Second Life was never just one of these things. It was a unique combination of all of the above—plus some weird sex stuff—that no other company has managed to displace. Even Second Life 's developer Linden Lab is hesitant to compete with it. Once in awhile, developer Blizzard will introduce a new continent or reconfigure an existing location, but all players are guests in the world that Blizzard created.

Second Lifeby contrast, allows users to not only create their own avatars, but also to shape and create the world they're in, importing their own 3D assets and modifying the world with the Linden Scripting Language. If you let users make whatever they want, they'll make a lot of sex stuff. That means that Second Life users can build anything from virtual genetics labsto depraved sex dungeonsto campaign headquarters for Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders.

This is probably why you know Second Life even exists, and you probably first heard about it around That's when Second Life started to seep into pop culture at large. It was featured in the American version of The Officewhich made fun of the fact that it's a virtual world where you could work at a paper company, and CSI: New Yorkwhich was infatuated with the notion that a virtual world could have a seedy underbelly.

I was in art school at the time, and my teachers, who previously dismissed video games, started talking about Second Life as a new frontier for exhibitions, installations, and performances. Universities like MIT and Stanford started building virtual spaces in Second Lifeassuming that in the future they'd be able to host virtual lectures and classes. Second Life users can also sell creations like these to others, so some are sticking around simply because it's good business.

He added that while many have tried, no competitor has been able to successfully provide this type of freedom in a virtual world. Many would-be competitors tried much more restrictive approaches, but ultimately none have found the same success that Second Life has. It interviewed Second Life 's real estate tycoon Anshe Chung within the virtual world, only to have the event interrupted by a sudden parade of floppy, floating dildos.

Such are the dangers of a virtual world where the inhabitants are given this level of control. Dirty, kinky sex stuff to float any boat.

At the same time, many of these Adult locations are also communities with regulars who get to know each other and share other interests beyond kinky sex, so I'd say the online community aspect is just as much if not more of a draw. If it wasn't, they'd just go elsewhere to watch non-interactive porn.
